Personal
Business
Named the 2006 "Entrepreneur of the Year" by the Guilderland
Chamber of Commerce, Mark is president of Mark Grimm Communications,
a Guilderland media relations and communications training firm.
His blend of senior level experience in business, media, politics,
and government gives him the “can-do” skills to make
an immediate and positive impact on the Guilderland Town Board.
Mark was also a 2006 "Trainer of the Year" nominee by
the regional chapter of the American Society of Training and Development.
Media
Mark’s 12 years as a TV news anchor/reporter provided the
investigative skills needed to uncover the hidden truth in town
government and the media savvy to advance the people's causes. Mark
appeared on CBS News and the Phil Donahue show and conducted one-on-one
interviews with Presidents Bush and Clinton.
Mark appears often on Capital Region media outlets as an analyst
and is the weekly host and executive producer of the Siena Alumni
Connection radio show.
Volunteer Work
Mark is President of the Stevens Farm Homeowners' Association (three
years). He has also been a volunteer member of the Guilderland Citizens'
School Budget Advisory Committee for the past four years where he
has been an outspoken advocate calling for lower school taxes. Mark
was a founding committee member for Operation Welcome Home. This
organization was established during the 1991 Persian Gulf War in
order to help provide a successful homecoming experience for our
returning vets. In the past, outside the Capital Region, he has
been a volunteer telethon TV host for Easter Seals, Children's Hospital,
and Muscular Dystrophy.
Government
As Director of Communication Services (3½ years) for the
State Assembly Minority, Mark managed 22 employees in four units,
coordinated statewide public forums; and did media training for
Assembly legislators and candidates.
As Special Assistant (3 years) to the Director of Regulatory Reform,
Mark was the driving force behind an office wide database that compiled
key results such as actual savings from regulatory reform. His "What's
Driving You Nuts" form became a popular feedback tool resonating
with frustrated business owners statewide.
Politics
Mark has managed five political campaigns in NY, including one in
the Rensselaer County Legislature where a first-time candidate defeated
an eight-year incumbent. As a candidate himself, he came within
114 votes of upsetting a 16-year incumbent in a Monroe County Legislature
race.
Education
Mark has a master's in communications from Syracuse University's
Newhouse School and is a magna cum laude Siena graduate ('78), where
he was named the Conlin Scholar, the college's top honor for English
majors. He has also been an adjunct media professor at the College
of St. Rose, and is now an adjunct journalism professor at Siena.
Personal
Mark's family is the center of his life --- his wife, Karen (Pauley)
Grimm, is a lifelong Guilderland resident who has spent much of
her professional life in special education. Their beautiful daughter,
in pre-school, is really the head of the household (or at least
it seems that way).
Mark has eight brothers and sisters (and all are involved in the
campaign).
Memberships
Mark is a member of the Guilderland Chamber of Commerce, Hudson-Mohawk
chapter of the American Society of Training and Development, the
AD Club of Albany, and Talent Guild International.
